Glamour, refinement and good taste. These three characteristics may well define the Queen’s Cup, the most prestigious English polo tournament for the high handicap season, restricted to teams of up to 22 goals.
As British as five o’clock tea, its site, the Guards Polo Club, is located behind Windsor Castle, near London. In 1960, Queen Elizabeth II donated the trophy, thus formally opening this competition; and ever since, in each final match, the Queen shows up to give away the cup and greet the players.
The club is an extremely exclusive one, it has around 1000 members, but only a small number of them – a little over 10 % - plays polo; the club house and a bar are surrounded by ten playing fields. Accustomed to welcome very distinguished personalities, during this last edition, the club accepted the Vivari firm to become the title sponsor of the event for the following 3 years.
Besides, the 2007 Queen’s Cup continued to have the support of its principal clients: Cartier watches; Credit Suisse Group - the financial services company -; and Mellado, a firm devoted to the financial advice to individuals and corporations. At the same time, the championship was sponsored by 13 other firms; among them, we can mention Audi, Almond Resorts Hotels, Pommery, the Pierse Group, and La Martina.
On top of it, 32 brands of different business lines were also present at the so-called Retail Village: textile goods, tourism, foodstuffs, jewelry, and others. From the sportive point of view, 45 Argentine polo players took part in this competition, striving during three weeks to obtain the top prize.
But only one of them, against all predictions, was able to receive the final greeting from Elizabeth II: Juan Martín Nero and his team Loro Piana, turned out to be the sensation of the tournament, by leaving Adolfo Cambiaso on the way, and in the definition, beating Gonzalo and Facundo Pieres by 12 –11. Undoubtedly, a great achievement that goes far beyond any tradition.
